The Root Canal Procedure

If you’ve recently scheduled a root canal procedure with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS, chances are you might be a little frightened. “Root canal” has become a scary term for dental patients to hear, however the benefits of the procedures along with the advances in dental technology has made it much less scary. When a tooth becomes infected, it is usually related to the nerves in the root of the tooth. The infected roots will need to be removed because of this. We want to make you as comfortable as possible here at the practice, so allow us to explain the root canal procedure step-by-step.

The root canal usually takes one to three visits. First, you will have dental X-rays done to check the extent of the damage. You will also receive a local anesthetic to control pain. A rubber-like sheet called a dental dam is then put in your mouth to keep the tooth clean, protected and free of saliva. Decay is removed, and an opening is made through the crown of the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber. After the diseased pulp is removed, the pulp chamber and root canals are flushed out and cleaned. If your root canal requires multiple visits, a temporary filling is placed in the crown to protect the tooth and keep out debris and saliva. The final stage of the root canal is restoring your tooth and experiencing pain relief.

Don’t Forget to Floss!

Every time you visit the dental practice of Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS either she or one of her hygienists is guaranteed to ask if you’ve been flossing. We’ve heard plenty of excuses as to why our patients aren’t flossing however, what many of these non-flossers don’t realize is that this step plays an important role in dental health. Flossing not only keeps your mouth clean, but it's designed specifically to clean the tight spaces between the teeth and the gap between the base of the teeth and the gums. If you want to prevent tooth decay and keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime, utilize this flossing technique into your oral hygiene routine.

  • Use 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of it around the middle finger of one hand, the rest around your other middle finger.

  • Grasp the string tightly between your thumb and forefinger, and use a rubbing motion to guide it between teeth.

  • When the floss reaches the gum line, form a “C” to follow the shape of the tooth.

  • Hold the strand firmly against the tooth, and move it gently up and down.

  • Repeat with the other tooth, and then repeat the entire process with the rest of your teeth.

  • Use fresh sections of floss as you go.

Brushing Technique

Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums are essential to your oral hygiene as well. It is important that you brush and floss your teeth on a daily basis to prevent tooth decay and invasive procedures in the future. As much as we love to see you and your smile at the dental practice of Suzanne Haeri, DDS, we want you to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime. You can start by utilizing these brushing tips the next time you whip out that toothbrush of yours.

  • Start with the outer and inner surfaces, and brush at a 45-degree angle. Don’t forget your back teeth!

  • Move on to the chewing surfaces. Hold the brush flat and brush back and forth along these surfaces.

  • Once you get to the inside surfaces of your front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and use gentle up-and-down strokes with the tip of the brush.

  • Be sure to brush your teeth gently along the gum line.

  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue!
