The Benefits of Dental Implants

In the past when you had missing teeth, there were not many options besides getting dentures or bridges alone to replace them. Now, dental implants offer a method of replacing teeth that fixes your smile and requires no change to your life or eating the foods you love. Dr. Suzanne Haeri in Los Angeles, CA, uses dental implants to give you a new smile that will increase your quality of life and confidence dramatically.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant itself is not a replacement tooth. It is a replacement root of the tooth that is intended to provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable teeth. The dental implant is inserted into the bone of your jaw and can last your entire life when properly cared for. Historically, it was thought that for patients with insufficient bone in the jaw or who had other health conditions, it was not possible to insert a dental implant. This is no longer the case due to advancements in bone reconstruction and now almost anyone can receive dental implants.

What are the advantages of receiving dental implants from Dr. Suzanne Haeri in Los Angeles, CA? The benefits of getting dental implants are many. Here are just a few:

-You can continue to eat your favorite foods: Go ahead and have that taffy, corn on the cob, or peanut butter. There will be no fear of your teeth embarrassingly slipping out of place as sometimes this happens with the use of dentures alone.

-Speaking is made easier: Our teeth play a significant role in the sounds we make. Loose dentures may slip and slide, causing you to have a lisp or sound slurred. Dental implants fix this issue by providing a strong surface for your tongue to press against when talking and providing a strong foundation for dentures so that there will be no slipping.

-Prevention of bone loss and the support of surrounding teeth: Dental implants cause stimulation of the jawbone. This is in opposition to the resorption of the bone where your original decayed tooth root once was. This stimulation is necessary for the rebuilding of bone. Also, the shifting of adjacent teeth will be prevented when the gap is filled in with a dental implant.

-Increased confidence: The knowledge that you can speak, laugh, and eat freely without the anxiety of your teeth slipping out of place will significantly improve your confidence in public and social settings.

-They are low-maintenance: Dental implants require no additional care than what is expected from good oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing twice a day, using a mouthwash, and getting regular dental cleanings.

Dental Implants

Dr. Suzanne Haeri replaces teeth and restores patient smiles with dental implants. Implants are a permanent restorative option for teeth that are missing or have been extracted.  They look and feel like natural teeth, and are the most permanent and efficient means of replacing lost teeth.

An implant is placed over a series of appointments because of the healing time required.  Implants are titanium screws inserted through an incision in the gum. Over a period of 3-6 months, the jaw bone heals around the implant to become a solid, stable base for the new tooth. During this time a patient is fitted with a temporary crown, and a custom crown is created to match their smile perfectly.

After the jaw bone and gums have healed appropriately, the custom crown is placed in a second minor procedure.  The doctor may need to expose the head of the implant by removing some gum tissue, and the crown will be screwed to the top of the implant.  When this is complete the tooth looks like part of the natural smile, and with proper care will last for decades!

Extraction Site Preservation

If you’re missing teeth due to tooth extraction, periodontitis, or facial trauma, it’s important to fill the empty space where your natural tooth once lived. Since wisdom teeth are located in the back of the mouth, the site from extraction will heal on its own with no complications. However, if it’s necessary for other teeth to be removed, plans must be made. Fortunately at the practice of Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS, we have plenty of options for you.

If a tooth is removed and nothing is done with the extraction site, the jaw bone will degenerate and change shape during healing and can cause your teeth to shift. This can create problems in your bite and affect your ability to speak and chew. At the practice of Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS, depending on your personal needs, she can determine if you would benefit from dental implants or a dental bridge to restore your smile. Once a recommendation is made, a treatment plan will follow.

Restore Your Smile with Dental Implants

Do you frown in photos? Have you lost your desire to smile because of missing teeth? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS can restore your smile with dental implants. A dental implant is a surgical component that is placed into the jawbone to support a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a denture. Dental implants are natural-looking and are an excellent cosmetic option in addition to restorative.

Dental implants are just like your natural teeth. They have an intimate relationship with the gum which is why it’s important to be in good general and oral health before undergoing oral surgery. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, replace several teeth, or replace all of them if the damage is that severe. Dental implants can last for up to 10 years with proper oral care and maintenance.

What is a Bone Graft?

Bone grafting is widely used throughout medicine because of how it helps the body heal.  In dentistry, a bone graft is used to strengthen a patient’s jaw bone when it is not strong enough to support a needed implant. Dr. Suzanne Haeri performs bone grafts to restore function to the mouths of patients in need of dental implants.

When a tooth is missing for an extended period of time the jaw bone in that area is vulnerable and can weaken, and some patients naturally have a softer jaw bone.  In either case, when the patient needs an implant the bone needs to be reinforced.  A jaw bone graft is typically harvested from a healthy location in the patient’s mouth.  During the procedure, the harvested material is grafted to the area of the jaw that needs an implant.  This reinforces the jaw bone and encourages the growth of new bone material.  This healing process typically takes a few months and should be monitored by your dentist. Once the graft has fused and healed, a dental implant can be placed.

Dental Implants Installation Process

Dental implants are often considered the best tooth replacement option available. They are most similar to a real tooth than any other replacement option. Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS of Los Angeles, CA offer dental implants to her patients because of this. Keep reading to learn about how dental implants are installed.

Dental implants are permanent replacement teeth for when a tooth is fully extracted, with no root structure left. They are inserted into your bone socket, so they are “implanted” like a real tooth.

The process of installing dental implants takes a few months. First, Dr. Haeri will place a titanium screw into the bone socket of the missing tooth. The healing process for this step can take between three and six months. During this time, Dr. Haeri will place a temporary crown so you can still use your teeth normally. Once the implant heals, an abutment is placed to act as the base of your new tooth. A custom-made crown is then permanently cemented into place. The brand-new dental implant is then set to last a lifetime.

When a Dental Implant Fails

Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. In fact, they are one of the most reliable long-term methods of tooth replacement. However, like any other surgical procedure, there are a variety of internal and external factors that can play a role in complications or even total failure of treatment. If this ever were to happen to you, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS is here to assess the situation.

Osseointegration describes the formation of a direct functional and structural connection between a person’s bone and an artificial implant. There are two primary reasons for “later” implant failure after the osseointegration process has been successful. These include over-stressing implants with too much biting force or inflammatory disease of the gum tissues and/or bone around the implant. Prevention plays a tremendous role in avoiding implant failure. Once the implants are placed, it’s crucial to maintain a good oral hygiene routine. Make sure you schedule regular dental cleanings to help keep the tissues around your implants healthy.

Dental Implant Details

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. Here at the office, the dental implant procedure is a team effort between Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS and staff. Depending on your specific condition and the type of implant chosen, we will create a treatment plan tailored to meet your needs.

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your natural teeth. They are an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile. Dental implants are made of titanium and other materials that are compatible with the human body. However, you must be in good health and have the proper bone structure and healthy gums for the implant to stay in place. The success rate for implants depends on the tooth's purpose and location in the mouth, as well as a patient's overall health.

Bone Grafts for Dental Implant Placement

Dental implants are the ideal replacement option for missing teeth; however the jawbone needs to be in the right condition to place dental implants. For patients whose jawbone has deteriorated too much to hold a dental implant, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS performs bone grafts right in her Los Angeles, CA dental office.

Bone grafts consist of building up regions of the jawbone with bone fragments from another area of the mouth. These bone fragments are packed into the jawbone to heal and regenerate even more bone tissue to grow. The end result is a healthy and strong jawbone that can hold a dental implant for a long time. These bone grafts are frequently performed in the space between the upper molars and the sinus cavity, and the ridge where the teeth are settled in.

When the sinus cavity is too low, sometimes there is not enough space to place the implants. In this case, the bone graft is called a sinus augmentation or a sinus lift. In other cases, the ridge where teeth are settled in has deteriorated too much after a tooth goes missing. This is called ridge modification or expansion.

If you are aiming to replace your missing tooth with a dental implant, bone grafting may be needed first. To schedule your consultation with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS of Los Angeles, CA, call our office at (310) 657-2200. Appointments may also be made through our website, www.suzannehaeridds.com

Dental Implant Benefits

Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth that have been lost due to periodontal disease, an injury, or some other reason. In fact, they are the most reliable long-term option for restoring your smile. If you are self-conscious because you have a toothless grin, wear dentures that are uncomfortable, or don’t have proper tooth structure to create a dental bridge, talk to Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS to see if dental implants are the right option for you.

To define a dental implant, it is actually a replacement for the root or roots of a tooth. Like tooth roots, dental implants are secured in the jawbone and are not visible once surgically placed. If you’ve lost teeth for any reason, the shape of your face may change, causing you to appear older than your actual age. That’s because when teeth are lost, the bone that supported those teeth is lost too. Placing dental implants stabilize the bone, preventing its loss. In addition to replacing lost teeth, implants help maintain the jawbone’s shape and density. They also help you eat, chew, smile, talk, and look completely natural.
