What are Sealants For?

With the approach of the school year, many parents are eager to make sure their children’s teeth are in good condition. Toothaches are a common reason for children’s sleep and behavior problems, and general dentists can provide preventive care as well as repair. But one of the most common forms of preventive dentistry, the application of sealants, works for adults as well as children. At Dr. Suzanne Haeri’s South Carthay dental office, we’re pleased to offer sealants for the protection of our patients’ teeth, and we especially want adults who have a history of tooth decay to know how they can benefit.

Sealants are shields that are applied to the grinding surfaces of the molars and premolars. Those teeth have multiple raised bits, called cusps, with indentations between them. The indentations commonly become caked in food debris, particularly starches, making them good spots for oral bacteria to grow in. These parts of the teeth can also be difficult to brush effectively, allowing the acid by-product of oral bacteria to settle into indentations and create bigger cracks. However, sealants smooth out the teeth’s grinding surfaces and create a barrier between the enamel and the food debris. They leave the teeth textured enough to fulfill their function, but slow the rate of decay.

Application of sealants doesn’t require preparation from the patient. After cleaning the teeth, we’ll apply a mild etching acid to them to increase their surface area. We’ll then paint the plastic sealant on in liquid form and harden it with a blue light. The patient will resume eating normally by the next day, and afterward, the sealant can last for as long as ten years as long as they maintain regular oral hygiene.

Plaque and Tartar

No matter what your teeth are like, keeping regular dental appointments is one of the most important things you can do to keep them healthy. Twice-yearly cleanings are an opportunity to remove tartar, the calculus that inevitably builds up on teeth near the gumline. At the South Carthay office of Dr. Suzanne Haeri, we provide general dental services as well as cosmetic specialties, and we want all our patients to be proud of having clean, healthy teeth and gums.

Plaque and tartar are different things. Plaque is sticky and always present. It’s a film on the teeth made up of saliva, sugar from food, and oral bacteria. There are hundreds of species of oral bacteria, and most of them have a neutral or positive impact on us, but a few produce acid as a by-product of their cellular respiration. The acid gets caught in the teeth’s bio-film, leading to the decay of tooth enamel and the recession of gum tissue.

Tartar is plaque that has hardened into a yellow or brown colored paste. It contributes to gum recession and inflammation, but unlike plaque, it can’t just be brushed away. It only takes a few hours for plaque to start hardening, which is why people should drink water throughout the day, brush their teeth twice a day, and try to stick to set meal times or clean their teeth after snacking. During a dental appointment, a hygienist will break up tartar safely and floss each tooth properly, but patients can reduce how much tartar builds up between appointments by practicing good hygiene and avoiding foods that are sticky and full of simple sugars.

How Fruit Juice Affects Your Teeth

Fruit juice seems like the perfect healthy drink for your kids, right? This all-natural beverage may seem like the best choice for your kids to enjoy as opposed to soda or caffeinated drinks. But, fruit drinks are also a major culprit for tooth decay and cavities. Located in Los Angeles, CA, Dr. Suzanne Haeri treats a variety of dental health problems, including tooth decay which can stem from fruit juice.

The Dangers of Sugar

You’ve probably heard the dangers of sugar a thousand times. Sugar negatively impacts your body and your teeth are no different. After you eat junk food or sip on unhealthy drinks, harmful bacteria in your mouth like Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus feed on the sugars leftover in your saliva. These bacteria create a plaque on the surface of your teeth. They also trigger destructive acids which cause enamel erosion and tooth decay.

But, Why Fruit Juice?

Okay, we know sugar is bad, but why is fruit juice dangerous for oral health? When it comes to fruit juice or any similar food, keep in mind that just because something is natural doesn’t mean its completely healthy.

Whether its sugar from candy or natural sugars derived from fruit, sugar is still sugar and harms your child’s teeth. Fruit juice isn’t all that healthy as well, with too much extra sugar and calories even if it’s naturally derived from just fruit. Bacteria also feed off natural sugars in your child’s mouth, leading the way for weak enamel and decay.

Treatment

Prevention is the best medicine. So the next time you pair your child’s afternoon snack with some beverage, choose water instead of juice. Of course, you don’t have to completely end your child’s juice intake but limiting the amount of fruit juice your child consumes daily is a good idea.

If your child is already experiencing dental problems from sugar, contact Dr. Haeri’s office in Los Angeles, CA today.  We use a variety of treatment options including fillings, crowns, and extractions to improve your child’s oral health.

Pediatric Sealants

Did you know that cavities are common in kids ages five to fourteen? With baby teeth falling out and adult teeth coming in, deep grooves and gaps make it difficult for kids to brush their teeth thoroughly. Suzanne Haeri DDS in Los Angeles, CA, takes pride in educating her young patients about proper oral hygiene. Sometimes, though, certain procedures are required to help young patients prevent cavities. Sealants prevent food from getting stuck in grooves and gaps, which ultimately prevents the process of tooth decay. Your Los Angeles dentist is committed to helping your child stay cavity-free!

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, dental sealants are used in an effort to keep out tooth decay. Sealants are plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth. Dr. Haeri fills in the grooves that are hard to reach while brushing with the thin plastic material. This added layer of protection greatly lowers your child’s chances of developing a cavity.

When you help your child prevent cavities at an early age, they are less likely to have oral health problems as an adult. The way they take care of their baby teeth directly affects how taking care of their adult teeth will be. Solidify good dental hygiene habits now by encouraging your child to take care of their teeth properly, and they will be rewarded with a lifetime of good oral health.

Do you think your child could benefit from sealants? We are happy to address any questions or concerns you might have. Suzanne Haeri DDS practices at 1100 S La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA 90035. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please visit suzannehaeridds.com or call 310-657-2200.

How Sugar Affects Your Teeth

Sugar impacts your teeth in a big way. Suzanne Haeri DDS in Los Angeles, CA, takes pride in educating her patients about the importance of restricting sugary foods and drinks. It’s ideal to cut out this kind of food from your diet completely, but it’s understandable that sometimes there’s nothing better than a crisp soda on a hot day. More attention should be paid to, say, how many sugary beverages you drink in a day or week. Is it really adding up? If so, consider restricting your intake for the sake of your teeth.

Sugar easily coats the surface of your teeth and attracts the “bad bacteria,” such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. These destructive bacteria feed on the sugar and disturb the natural pH of your mouth, to the point where the acidity is too much for your teeth. Over time, the enamel on your teeth is broken down little by little. This isn’t ideal since tooth enamel cannot be replaced. Once that natural barrier is gone, it’s gone for good. Improper dental hygiene only speeds up this destructive process.

If you can’t give up sugar completely, then consider these tips to fight tooth decay:

- Watch what you eat and drink. Make sure to incorporate healthy options, such as fibrous vegetables.

- Restrict the sugar. Try drinking more water, your teeth will thank you (and so will your body).

- Practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing two to three times a day.

- Visit your dentist regularly. Your dentist will be able to take a closer look inside your mouth, monitor anything suspicious, and give your teeth a good professional cleaning.

Bonding and Fillings

Chipping or breaking a tooth can be very painful. It leaves the tooth misshapen or with a sharpened edge that could hurt the inside of your mouth. Dental bonding and fillings assist in rebuilding the affected tooth with special materials. Suzanne Haeri DDS in Los Angeles, CA, is proud to offer both of these procedures to her patients. Dr. Haeri is committed to helping fix your smile when unexpected chips and breaks occur!

Dental bonding restores the natural shape of your tooth by using composite resin matched to your specific tooth color. In cases of accidental damage or minor decay, it is an inexpensive way to restore the look of the tooth to its normal healthy self. Dental bonding can also be used for protecting the roots of your teeth. Receding gums that expose the tooth root allow bacteria in easily, making them more susceptible to infection.

Dental fillings focus more on restorative efforts rather than cosmetic ones since they are stronger and more durable than dental bonding. This method also has a low cost but is the better option over dental bonding in the long run. Whereas dental bonding fixes the outside of the tooth, dental fillings fix the inside of a tooth that has been damaged from decay or breakage. For back teeth, it’s better to use metal fillings so that it can better withstand the force of chewing.

Have you chipped or broken a tooth? We will assess the damage and come up with a treatment plan. Suzanne Haeri DDS practices at 1100 S La Cienega Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA 90035. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please visit suzannehaeridds.com or call 310-657-2200.

Sensitive Teeth

Your teeth shouldn’t just look great; they should feel great, too! That’s our belief at the South Carthay office of Dr. Suzanne Haeri. Many people who suffer from sharp toothaches when they bite into something cold believe that this is normal. In fact, it could be a sign of a problem with their enamel. To understand why, it is necessary to know the tooth’s internal anatomy.

Dental pulp contains a highly sensitive nerve. It is surrounded by dentin, which is a porous substance that easily conducts heat. Enamel, a hard substance comprised of calcium and phosphate ions, makes up the crown of the tooth and insulates the underlying dentin. Cementum, a sticky substance, makes up the outer layer of the tooth root and is much thinner.

Dentin is yellow-brown in color and can be seen through enamel when enamel is thin. Although people with bruxism may grind down their enamel, loss of it is usually due to acid. Drinks such as soda and citrus juice contain high amounts of acid and people with acid reflux often have sensitivity on their upper back teeth. But most enamel loss, as well as most gum recession around sensitive tooth roots, is due to oral bacteria. Patients will need to brush more thoroughly (not necessarily harder) to rid themselves of acid and decay-causing bacteria, but we can help them by providing deep cleanings and examining them for signs of decay.

Asthma and Oral Health

At Dr. Suzanne Haeri’s South Carthay dental practice, we want our patients to know how to care for their general and cosmetic dental needs no matter what other health issues they may have. People with asthma can be at particular risk for developing caries, but there are steps they can take to minimize damage.

Asthma is inflammation in the upper respiratory tract. It often causes people to breathe through their mouths, putting them at risk for developing dry mouth (xerostomia). Saliva plays an important part in fighting oral infections; it washes away food that bacteria might otherwise eat and it neutralizes the acid bacteria produce. Some strategies for maintaining saliva are to drink lots of fluids, use artificial throat moisturizers, and to chew sugarfree gum. Patients may also want to talk to their asthma specialists about changing medications that cause dry mouth.

A potential issue with inhaler medications is that they may contain sugar. In that case, patients need to remember to brush their teeth in between using them and going to bed. Some asthma patients take muscle relaxants to loosen their throats, but this could also loosen the sphincter that keeps stomach acid out of the esophagus. Patients suffering from acid reflux may need topical fluoride treatments and to avoid consuming alcohol, citric acid, red meat, garlic, or chocolate before lying down.

Children's Oral Care

At the South Carthay office of Suzanne Haeri, DDS we advise parents to start cleaning their children’s teeth as soon as their baby teeth develop. Tooth decay is the most chronic disease for children is tooth decay which is preventable through practicing good oral health care.

When your children’s baby teeth develop, you should clean their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a dab of toothpaste. We recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes for children because they are gentler on your gums and teeth.

Tooth decay occurs when plaque and bacteria form on your teeth and form cavities. Tooth decay is preventable when you brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. When possible, we encourage all of our patients to eat a healthy diet and limiting your consumption of sugar and acidic that can damage your teeth.

Don’t forget to bring your children twice a year for cleaning with us. We want your children to practice good oral hygiene so they have the best smile.

Avoid Drinking Soda

At the South Carthay office of Suzanne Haeri, DDS we encourage our patients to drink more water and less soda. Soda is damaging to your oral health because bacteria in your mouth feed off of sugar and create acid.  Once the acid is created, it dissolves your tooth enamel and leads to decay.

When possible, we want our patients to drink soda with a straw to limit the amount of sugar that is resting on their teeth. Every time you drink soda, acid eats away at your tooth enamel for about 20 minutes. If possible, brush your teeth after drinking soda, and if you are unable to, rinse your mouth out with water to wash away the acid.

Regardless of how much soda you drink, we want all of our patients to brush twice a day to fight tooth decay. The best way to prevent tooth decay is by drinking only water and practicing good oral hygiene.

Baby Teeth Care

Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS stresses the importance of proper oral care for baby teeth and making sure they are properly cleaned. Taking care of your children’s baby teeth is critical in the development of their teeth and could lead to problems in the future if parents of children aren’t taking the proper steps to ensure good oral hygiene.

Baby teeth are vital for children’s teeth as they are placeholders while waiting for your permanent teeth to emerge. If your child’s baby teeth are damaged by tooth decay or some other trauma, they might need to be removed prematurely. Removing baby teeth prematurely can lead to complications with permanent teeth later on. Tooth decay and failure to properly brush and floss your teeth can cause damage as your permanent teeth develop.

To prevent tooth decay on baby teeth, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS recommends patients bring their young adults in twice a year to make sure baby teeth are being properly developed.

Protect Your Teeth during the Holidays

We know how hard you worked for your dazzling smile. At Dr. Suzanne Haeri’s South Carthay dental office, patients can expect high-quality treatments for tooth stains and decay, but we take a preventive approach, too. During the winter holidays, people have a lot more exposure to sugar, so we want to provide them with some tips for keeping their teeth safe while remaining sociable.

Dental stains are usually caused by dark-colored drinks such as coffee, soda, red wine, and hot chocolate. These drinks, as well as apple cider, eggnog, and spirits, can also be high in sugar. Tooth decay is caused by bacteria metabolizing sugar and excreting acid, so the amount of decay a person experiences correlates with the amount of time teeth are exposed to sugar. If people take sips slowly and don’t drink water afterward, their teeth will remain coated in residue. Bacteria can also metabolize complex sugars, so bits of crackers, breadcrumbs, or potato starch stuck in between teeth can be converted into acid. Naturally, hard candies, such as candy canes, also put the teeth at risk.

You don’t want to overuse whitening toothpaste, but you don’t want sugar to remain stuck on your teeth for several hours, either. You could try limiting your sugar intake to meals, when you will be producing more saliva. That will help wash away residue. You could also chew sugar-free gum in between meals to dislodge debris and stimulate more saliva. Drink fluoridated water in between sips of sugary or stain-causing drinks to wash them away. If you’re traveling to somewhere without fluoridation, you might bring a few bottles with you.

Suzanne Haeri, DDS, is located at 1100 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, California, 90035. To set up an appointment, call 310-647-2200 or visit Suzanne Haeri DDS and fill out a request.

Dental Sealants for Pediatric Patients

Nearly half of all children and adolescents in the United States have had cavities in their permanent teeth. To prevent them from forming, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS offers dental sealants to eligible candidates. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to prevent decay. Most tooth decay in children and teenagers occurs on the chewing surfaces where pits and groves tend to trap food and bacteria. Sealants fill in these pits and grooves so that bacteria cannot multiply.

Sealants are easy for Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS to apply. The sealant is painted onto the tooth enamel, where it bonds directly to the tooth and hardens. This plastic resin bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of the chewing surfaces of back teeth. The sealant acts as a barrier, protecting enamel from plaques and acids. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. With proper oral care, dental sealants can last up to ten years.

Tooth Colored White Fillings

If you have tooth decay that has caused a cavity (hole) in your tooth, then you are likely to benefit from a cosmetic filling. However, decay is not the only reason you may need a filling. Other reasons include cracked or broken teeth, teeth that are worn from habits such as nail-biting, as well as tooth grinding. When you schedule a professional dental cleaning with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS, she will check for these problems, and decide whether a filling is right for you.

The type of fillings we provide at the office is called composite resin, or tooth-colored (white) filling. This type of filling provides good durability and resistance to fracture in small-to-mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing. They can be used on both the front or back teeth and supply the patient with a more natural looking appearance.

If you think you may benefit from tooth-colored fillings, please give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at the practice, visit www.suzannehaeridds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS in Los Angeles, CA, call 310-657-2200.

Dental Instruments

There are some pretty cool instruments in a dental office. There are also some that people may be uncomfortable with. In order to help our patients’ cleanings go smoothly, we at Dr. Suzanne Haeri’s office wanted to explain what some of the most frequently used ones are for.

The two instruments patients will see us use the most are the handheld mirror and the explorer. Also known as a probe, explorers are hooked instruments that are used to assess the hardness of enamel and to break up small bits of tartar. There are many differently shaped hooks for reaching different surfaces of different teeth. Some, called scalers, are used to remove tartar from gum pockets after they’ve been probed to check for infection.

We also commonly use instruments that are for constructing and placing fillings. A drill is used to remove infected tooth enamel after the patient has been numbed. White composite filling material can then be mixed on a small spatula and applied with a burnisher, which is a blunt instrument used to contour fillings. If a tooth is broken or needs to be extracted for any other reason, we can loosen it with an elevator, which is shaped like a small, narrow spoon, before pulling it with forceps.

Foods for Optimal Oral Health

Changes in the mouth begin with what we eat, therefore it’s important to be cautious of the foods that touch our plate. To prevent cavities and maintain optimal oral health, our diets should contain a variety of foods from each of the five food groups in the recommended amounts. These foods are grouped together because of the nutrients they contain. To help you get a better understanding, Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS is here to tell you what to eat and what to avoid.

If a person snacks frequently, they increase their risk of developing cavities. Added sugars and acids damage tooth enamel and can cause it to wear down which is why they should always be avoided. Like every other part of our body, teeth need nutrients to function properly. You should consume fruits, vegetables, and dairy products that are rich in calcium to help restore minerals in enamel, fight periodontal disease, and bad breath.

Why Sugar is Bad for Teeth

Though some fruits such as apples contain sugar, we need these healthy foods to survive. Added sugars, however, provide no nutritional value to teeth. Limiting sugar can do wonders for your overall and oral health. This is because sugar plays a harmful role in tooth decay, developing diabetes, and increasing a person’s chance of developing heart disease. Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS encourages patients to reduce their sugar intake to save their teeth.

Whenever we eat, the bacteria naturally found inside the mouth works hard to break down food. However, when sugars are in the mouth, they use plaque as a source of energy to thrive. This makes it harder to wash away with saliva and may cause you to spend more time in front of the sink, brushing and flossing. Sugar is the leading cause of cavities in adults and children. To protect your smile, consume nutritious foods, rather than cookies, cakes, and sticky foods.

Dry Mouth

When there isn’t enough saliva in your mouth, this can leave it feeling dry and uncomfortable. Dry mouth may occur in the morning after a long night of sleep, or it may be a sign of dehydration. A persistent dry mouth can become a problem because saliva is our mouth’s natural defense against tooth decay. If you notice your mouth is drier than usual, it may be time to discuss treatment options with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS.

Symptoms of dry mouth include a sticky, dry feeling in the mouth or a dry feeling in the throat. Though dry mouth is a normal part of aging, it can also be a symptom of an underlying medical condition, such as diabetes. Treatment for dry mouth usually depends on the cause, but it helps to avoid tobacco products, alcohol and drinks with caffeine as these can make the problem worse.

Drink More Water

It’s no secret that water is good for your teeth, but Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS is here to explain why. Drinking sugary beverages may assist in washing down your dinner, but they will do more harm to your dental health than good. Our bodies are made up of 60% water and staying hydrated not only delivers healthy nutrients and give your skin a healthy glow, it protects against tooth decay and cavities.

The cavity-causing bacteria from sugary food and drinks produce acid that wears away enamel if not washed off immediately. Water, however, cleans your teeth with every sip by washing away leftover food and residue. Drinking water with fluoride, aka “nature’s cavity fighter” is one of the easiest and most beneficial things you can do to help prevent cavities. You’ll still need to brush twice a day for two minutes and floss at least once a day to keep your teeth in tip-top shape.

If you have questions about your oral hygiene routine, please give us a call. To learn about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.suzannehaeridds.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Suzanne Haeri, DDS herself in our Los Angeles, CA office, call 310-657-2200.
